Matteo La Torre - Canon Italy:
"We offered to Filippo a quality photo kit that was efficient but simple and light at the same time. The choice was a fast EOS 70D camera which permitted fast shooting operations, without being heavy. It facilitates the translation and the pointing and it could provide a wide range of shots even at low temperatures. As far as the optical side, we have identified versatility, lightness and precision in EF 400mm f2.8 L IS and the Extender 2x III. This provides the right focus to push EOS 70D resolution to the limit, taking into account the atmosphere seeing at that height and the distance of the subjects."

When Filippo contacted us, we were impressed by the idea of an amateur photographer who wanted to create a project based on his photographic passion. Filippo is the proof that photographic passion can turn into excellence thanks to the everyday experience, in this case it’s his working environment. Canon Academy supported Filippo Blengini with materials and knowledge, because he represents many of our customers, who rely on EOS products and Canon services to obtain quality results, giving the ability to live their passion. A passion that begins and then follows the best moments of their own life. Sometimes it becomes a profession, this happens frequently such as in the case of Canon Academy’s student Alessandro Arena who, after few years attending our courses and through other experiences, became a professional photographer.
During experiential sessions, Canon Academy asked Alessandro to carry out this project during the shooting phase as a "field helper.” This was his comment: "Through Canon Academy I could improve my skills. Thanks to Filippo’s courage and tenacity I discovered a deeper aspect of photography that I did not know, which will definitely help me in my profession"

At Napapijri, we love the mountains just as much as you do; we know that electric thrill of the biting cold against our cheeks, the awesome magnificence of the dazzling sun against a pristine silent slope, the breathtaking views from the tops of the world. Nothing should diminish that experience and the entire Ski Collection has been researched, designed and built to ensure the most memorable mountain moments. Every piece of the collection has been individually studied for warmth, dryness, freedom of movement and striking style whether you are an off-trail heli skier, a teen on her first black slope, or a budding polar explorer.
The Napapijri journey starts in 1987 in the shadow of Europe’s highest peak, the Monte Bianco, where an Italian manufacturer of travel bags introduced a new sensibility to outdoor apparel, combining innovative materials with close attention to style. Today, the premium casual wear brand looks back to the great expeditions of the last century and the intrepid explorers who transformed their lives into unique journeys that inspired mankind. Napapijri is a variation of the Finnish word for the Arctic Circle and the logo, half positive and half negative, expresses the North and South Poles in graphic form. The Norwegian flag is closely linked to the brand's DNA, representing Europe’s northernmost country, the birthplace of some of the great explorers of the 20th century as well as a land of extreme conditions and magnificent landscapes.
The idea of an international cable-car link between Italy and a neighbouring country had attracted the attention of the Count Lora Totino. His idea was to link the Italian side of Courmayeur to Chamonix through the extraordinary massif of Mont Blanc.
On the Italian side there was a pre-existing cable-car linking Courmayeur and Rifugio Torino (3300 m). Building the next part to reach Punta Helbronner was not a problem, the great difficulty was crossing 5 km of glaciers under continuous movement. This amazing piece of engineering is 15 km long and includes 3 sections. The first one links La Palud to Rifugio Torino. This section was built during the war and as soon as it was opened the cables were severed by French fighter planes firing on them. The cable-car was then opened to the public in 1948.
Today challenges are not ended: we are building the New Mont Blanc Cable Car that will be terminated on 2015.

This section was built during the war and as soon as it was opened the cables were severed by French fighter planes firing on them. The cable-car was then opened to the public in 1948. The second section linking Chamonix to the Aiguille du Midi was opened to the public in 1956, and extends over 5416 m with a vertical climb of 2812 m . The first task was to link Chamonix (1030 m) and Plan des Aiguilles (2317 m), and then the following year the section reaching the Aiguille du Midi (3842 m) was built. The third section linking Rifugio Torino to the Aigulle du Midì was opened in 1958, using the Gros Rognon as natural support for the cables. The Glaciers cable-car begins at Punta Helbronner, and is undoubtedly the most interesting and spectacular section from both a technical and panoramic point of view. The Count Lora Totino developed the idea of an aerial pylon to support the cables linking the Gros Rognon and Punta Helbronner as it was impossible to install a normal pylon on the glaciers.

The new Mont Blanc ropeways will climb to Pointe Helbronner in two segments along a new line, replacing the old cableways, which will be demolished only once all the work has been completed. The new facilities will be constructed mainly in steel and glass, with spacious panoramic areas at the stations and rotating spherical glass cable cars. The driving force behind all this is aimed at amazing visitors through the use of technology, but with a particular focus on highlighting Mont Blanc’s natural scener.
The cable cars will be equipped with a system that will allow them to rotate, offering visitors a true 360° view of the whole area. At Pointe Helbronner, at 3452 metres above sea level, a round terrace of 14 meters diameter will be constructed, also offering a 360 degree view of Mont Blanc’s peak (4810 metres), of the Dent du Géant and of the extraordinary Vallée Blanche.

Italy is not just Rome, Milan, Venice and Florence, the tourist destinations par excellence: in winter, Courmayeur, on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, is paradise for skiers, climbers and dolce vita enthusiasts. An unrivalled alpine landscape and a warm Italian welcome.
In winter, in one of the top ten tourist attractions in Italy, a vacation under Mont Blanc cannot be missed. The Roof of Europe, in fact, is also Italian: on the Italian side of the mountain lies Courmayeur, the famous winter resort. The cradle of mountaineering, a romantic village nestled in the Alps, a glamourous destination: there’s always something to enjoy in this fascinating resort.
The most exceptional character of Courmayeur is its unique location: positioned among Italy, France and Switzerland, it represents the essence of the Italian Way of life. On the Italian side of Mont Blanc you can find the sense of style which is so typically Italian. Courmayeur is a perfect synthesis of different cultures. Mountains do not separate people, they rather unite peoples: no barriers can be found in this little town, where, traditionally, Italian and French alike are spoken. Despite being located at high altitude, thanks to its climate, Courmayeur deserves the appellation “the sunny side”: the summits form a barrier to the clouds, and even in the depths of winter the resort often boasts a beautiful bright blue sky.

Courmayeur is a paradise for skiers: the location offers a magnificent view of the Mont Blanc range and a great variety of perfectly powdered slopes. And, at the end of every day, the fun never stops, thanks to the après-ski: the gondola is open until midnight for those who wish to stay on the mountain in the bars and restaurants at high altitude to enjoy an aperitif or a dinner with shows, dj sets and live concerts.
Courmayeur is particularly renowned for freeride, with its stunning scenery of 65 km of fabulous slopes, lovely blankets of powder, and an incomparable landscape. The ski area gives access to wonderful, world-famous descents, and the area around Mont Blanc offers a series of beautiful off-piste runs, such as the incredibly scenic Vallée Blanche, between Italy and France, and Toula, on the Italian side.

Courmayeur is also the only resort under Mont Blanc, which offers the opportunity of heli-skiing, away from the crowds and the usual classic slopes, and all allows for the experience to connect with nature. Here, among the highest mountains of Europe, is the cradle of climbing: Courmayeur is home to the oldest Mountain Guides Association of Italy (the Società delle Guide Alpine), the second in the world to have been historically founded after the one in Chamonix, on the other side of Mont Blanc. A time-honored tradition that is still unbroken: accompanied by the mountain professionals, you can enjoy a wide variety of adventures at high altitude even in winter.

Lastly, Courmayeur, embodies the essence of elegance, which is perfectly represented by its “boutiques”. This town perpetuates an age-old tradition of warm welcome, and at the same time knows every little secret of a refined lifestyle. Here you can find the most prestigious brands and the most trendy bars and restaurants, and, actually, we can even speak of a “Courmayeur way of life”. A stroll in the historic via Roma means plunging into the glamourous style of the shops offering clothing, handcrafts, jewelry and design, as well as the gastronomic delicacies and wines typically produced in Aosta Valley.

Back in 2007, Blaise Agüera y Arcas wowed the audience at TED with this demo of Seadragon and Photosynth. Today his vision of all the world's pixels on every device is still compelling. With OpenSeadragon we're putting this power in everyone's hands.

OpenSeadragon 2.0 adds the ability to have multiple high-resolution images in the same scene, which opens up exciting new possibilities. This demo is just one example, using album cover art from the Rdio music streaming service.
The OpenSeadragon image viewer powers the In2White website experience. This one image with all its detail is so gigantic, that if you were to download the whole thing in its entirety, it would take many hours, if not days. Yet with OpenSeadragon you can smoothly zoom into any portion without having to wait at all. This is accomplished by breaking the original image up into thousands of bite-sized tiles, and only sending the ones you need for the area you're looking at. Add to this the ability to zoom and pan around the scene, and a little dash of magic, and you've got OpenSeadragon.
In 2003, Blaise Agüera y Arcas started the Seadragon project with a simple premise: all the world's pixels accessible on every device. In 2006 the team was acquired by Microsoft as part of their Live Labs initiative. Looking for a way to make their zooming technology accessible to a wider audience, Ian Gilman developed a JavaScript implementation during one of the Live Labs 'Out of the Box Weeks'. This was further developed into a robust solution by Aseem Kishore, and was released as open source in 2008. Since then, it has taken on a life of its own in the open source community, and is used by artists, photographers, and historians to share every detail of their work with the whole world. Meanwhile the framework continues to evolve, with 2015 bringing new developments like support for multiple simultaneous images and high-resolution screens. The In2White project is a natural extension of this evolution, with its massive dimensions, pushing the technology to ever greater heights.

A FASSI F425RA.2.24 E-DYNAMIC CRANE ON MONT BLANC.
The new Mont Blanc Cable-Car System goes into operation in June. This €105m project has taken four years to construct and connects a departure station at Pontal d’Entrèves, close to the motorway, with the arrival station at Punta Helbronner at an altitude of 3466 metres up in the mountains. This pioneering work was carried out by the Cordée Mont Blanc consortium on behalf of Funivie Monte Bianco S.p.A.. The consortium is led by Cogeis S.p.A., an historic Canavese company that specialises in major projects both in Italy and abroad. It was Cogeis S.p.A. that selected Fassi Gru as a technological partner, thanks in part to the decisive support of the Turin branch of the Bergamo industrial group and of its manager, Marco Linguanotto, at the specification stage.
“The aim was to identify a crane configuration that would meet the specific needs of the construction site, taking full advantage of the versatility of the machine,” explains Rossano Ceresoli, head of research & development of Fassi Gru. “As well as using it on the Mont Blanc construction site, the customer had requested that the crane could be subsequently installed on a commercial vehicle. This is how we identified the best solution to be the F425RA.2.24 e-dynamic crane model coupled with the L324 jib and equipped with winch and platform.” The high-altitude construction site needed a crane to handle materials at the upper station and to install the metal structures, complementing the heavy lifting duties carried out by a pair of tower cranes that had to be assembled by helicopter. As the works progressed, the Fassi F425RA crane became appreciated for a number of other operational benefits. For example, when wind speeds reached 70 km/h – not a rare occurrence, as they can sometimes top 150 km/h at this height – the tower cranes had to stop working for safety reasons. The Fassi crane, however, was able to continue. Work started in April 2011 and by the following year the F425RA e-dynamic crane was already operational. It was first installed at the lift shaft that connects the Punta Helbronner arrival station with the tunnel down to the Nuovo Rifugio Torino, a refuge building located 100 metres below. In fact, one of the advantages of the articulating crane was the speed with which it could be moved around the site to where it was needed next. The Fassi crane was then installed at the top of the structure where, using its winch, it was a great help placing reinforcing steel during cement casting. The next step was the construction of the two-storey station structure, always moving on to the floor above as gradually each concrete pour neared completion. Its contribution was also crucial in laying of the steel girders and crossbeams.
During the winter breaks the crane remained outdoors, covered only by a tarpaulin in temperatures that reached minus 30°C, but this never caused any problem. When work resumed, the crane was always ready, as was the case every morning, even after the worst storms. For the final stages, the Fassi F425RA crane was fitted with the work platform basket for tightening the bolts and installation of doors and windows and the solar panels. These were all operations in which it continually proved to be the ideal solution, simplifying the work and halving the time. It was another wonderful Italian story, technical ingenuity and perfect delivery set against a backdrop of stunning scenery, with our companies and the Fassi F425RA 2.24 e-dynamic crane in starring roles.

The specification set out that the crane should be suitable to use biodegradable oil. This resulted in the preparation of the entire hydraulic system using an appropriate production process. The construction standards of the machines that use mineral oil were incompatible. Biodegradability is the aspect that most characterises environmentally friendly oils and lubricants since they minimise environmental impact in case of accidental spillage. Traditional, often mineral, lubricants are lower cost products of poor durability and lesser performance, while biodegradable synthetic oil is a product that is more durable but also more expensive. The choice of an environmentally friendly lubricant is a real investment and requires a change of mindset: immediate savings are waived, but, in the financial calculation, whole-life costs are likely to be reduced due to reduced downtime, greater protection of machinery and, last but not least, the elimination of risking costly pollution damage.

The combination of a work platform accessory with an articulated crane must be certified by a body that is recognised at European level and verifies and approves the preparation in accordance with Annex IV of the EN280:2013 standard of machinery directive 2006/42/EC. Therefore anyone who sells and installs cranes fitted with mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) must contact a notified body to examine and certify the conformity of operation in accordance with the provisions of legislation. The new version of the type C standard was recently published, UNI EN280:2013, relating to mobile elevating work platforms.
